What Progress Looks Like

They said she may never walk.

A year ago, this was what a miracle looked like. To even have her using a walker was incredible.


Today, same park, one year later, THIS is what our miracle looks like.


Last year, Joyce couldn’t ride a bike. She couldn’t pedal. She couldn’t get up or down the stairs without tripping and falling; she was tripping on her own feet, literally. They said it was a motor planning issue. Then a physical therapist suggested we do serial casting and then AFOs (braces) to help correct the rigidity her toe-walking had caused. She started preschool with an autism diagnosis and casts on both legs. I wasn’t sure this was a good idea, but we did our best to make her feel beautiful about it.


Today, we took her to the park on the new bike she got for her birthday.


She rides as though she always had.

I don’t know what our future holds. Everything is changing so quickly. But on a day like today, when I can see, so clearly, how much progress our little family is making, it’s so hard not to smile.
