Because We Can..

“At the end of the day, let there be no excuses, no explanations, no regrets.”
― Steve Maraboli

We keep a pretty tight schedule in these parts. There are just a few short hours between picking Mary up from her school on one side of the city and picking Troy and Joyce up at theirs on the other side. It’s usually enough time for a lunch date, just me and my girl, or sometimes an expedition to the ice cream store or the grocery store. It’s enough time for just the two of us, and it’s one of my very favorite times of the day.

Starting tomorrow I will have to share that time, as Mary will start a physical therapy program twice a week, and soon after she will start on a feeding program and occupational therapy. These are necessary, I know. We had carefully decided to take a year off from all of these extra therapy regimes to let her adjust to the excitement of preschool. But it’s time to restart it all. She needs to be able to run and play with the other kids if she wants to. She needs to have the opportunity to develop those skills – walking, running, climbing, coloring, swinging, chewing and swallowing. And she’s gotten into a great program. It’s a good thing. But it will limit our “dates.” I guess that’s what happens when they grow up and get busy. She’s my last baby and selfishly, I’d love to keep her home with me all day, every day. But I can’t.

So, despite the fact that it was over 90 degrees here today, we snuck off to the zoo, just me and Mary. Don’t tell the other two. 😉 We have had a zoo membership at our local zoo since Troy was a baby. I used to take him once or twice a week, just to get out of the house back then. Oh, how times have changed! But the beauty of a membership, is you don’t have to do the whole zoo. You can just sneak over and visit a few of your favorites and still be back in time to pick everybody else up from school. We don’t go as much as we used to. We hardly go in the summer anymore, since Mary just can’t tolerate the heat. But today, with only one child, sitting in a shaded stroller, I was able to move her through much of the zoo in less than 90 minutes – and a good bit of that we spent in her favorite spot – the air conditioned aquarium. 🙂

Checking out the Red Panda

A baby Rhino and mom.

Cooling off in the misters – she loved this!

Not sure if she liked the fish or the bubbles more….

Her beloved penguins – the humidity fogged up the glass quite a bit, but if you know Mary, you know she just loves penguins!
